At the southernmost part of India is located the town of Kanyakumari (The name comes from the Devi Kanya KumariTemple ), where India concludes its boundaries, almost gracefully, surrounded by the mighty Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Bay of Bengal from all of its directions. The place is known for mesmerizing sunrises and sunset and attracts thousands of tourist from all around the world to flock and enjoy.
We started our day with a beautiful sunrise and after that, we visited Suchindrum Temple (Not very far from Kanyakumari). There are many stories associated with this temple. Men are allowed in the temple with no clothes on the upper part of the body. One of the stories that associated with the temple is :
Once Indra was infatuated with Ahalya, the wife of Rishi Gautama. One night he came to the hermitage where Gautama was living and crowed like a cock indicating the approach of dawn. Rishi Gautama thinking that dawn was imminent awoke from his sleep and went to the river for his ablutions prior to commencing his prayers. Realizing that it was too dark for dawn and too early for morning to break he returned to his hut. In the meantime, Lord Indra took the physical appearance of Rishi Gautama, approached Ahalya and satisfied his desire. Rishi Gautama returning from the river was enraged when he saw his wife in another man´s embrace and cursed the man’s entire body be covered with ‘yoni’ (the female organ) and his wife Ahalya to become a statue of stone. Lord Indra in order to get rid of this curse went to Gnanaranya and prayed to the Three Moorthys to rid him of this curse. When he was rid of his curse and transformed into his original form he built a temple and installed the Lingam to represent the three Moorthy – Thanu-Maal-Ayan, and the name of the place came to be known as Suchi-Indran.
The architecture of the temple is astonishing. There are pillars that don’t touch the ground and you can easily pass small paper below the pillars. Apart from that some of the pillars have 7 small pillars which make Indian music basic rhythm(Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa). On the way to Suchindram Temple, there are lots of Lotus flower.
After visiting Suchindrum Temple we visited the Vivekanand Rock,
it was built in honor of Swami Vivekananda, who is said to have attained enlightenment on the rock.
After that, we visited the Kumari Amman Temple and then we visited Gandhi Mandapam where the Ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was put to be immersed into Triveni (Sangam).
The place has a good market and places nearby to eat from Fancy Restaurant to the Tamil Food. The place is full of restaurant, tourist. You must try to visit, Best for Sunrise and Sunset. The history of the town is interesting and how everything became live after TSunami. Kanyakumari was one of the most affected city with Tsunami.
